EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE

The concept of evidence based medicine (EBM) utilizes medical research to guide best practices for treatment. California's recent sweeping changes in compensation law incorporated provisions to use such treatment guidelines. This session will explore the controversies and limitations in an evidence based medicine approach, and how clinicians evaluate the medical literature to guide practice.

MAXIMUM MEDICAL IMPROVEMENT:

What is it and how do we get there from here?
The point when an injured worker reaches maximum medical improvement (MMI) implies a crossroads has been reached in the case. Yet, MMI may have different meanings to the physician, insurer and the attorneys involved. This multi-disciplinary panel will explore different interpretations of MMI, how and when the physician determines it has been reached, and where the claim goes from there.

MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO MAXIMIZE INJURED WORKERS' RECOVERY AND RETURN TO GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT

Return to work can require attention not only to treating the medical diagnosis but addressing psychological and psychosocial barriers. Realistic goal setting and communication amongst the team members is critical for success. Managing fixed beliefs, functional expectations and successful return to work strategies will be discussed.
